Young Hoosier Book Award Description
The Young Hoosier Book Award Program was first established in 1974 as a way to honor authors of books for children, ranging from picture books to intermediate level (middle school level) books. Students around the state participate in the program each year by voting for their favorite books. Winning authors are chosen in three categories. The program has grown from that first year, starting with 4,681 students helping choose E.B. White’s Trumpet of the Swan as the award’s first winner to 73,000 students throughout the state voting for their favorite book last year!
The Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) program, established by the Indiana Library Federation, is intended to promote recreational reading among Indiana students. Each year, the YHBA committees select 20 books for the Picture Book list for grades K-3 and 20 books for the Intermediate list for grades 4-6. Middle grade list for grades 7 and 8.
